How to Jumpstart a Car: Step-by-Step Guide | Shift'n Gears Auto Repair

If your car battery dies, knowing how to jumpstart your vehicle can get you back on the road quickly and safely. At Shift'n Gears Auto Repair, we're here to guide you through the steps to jumpstart a car properly. Whether you’re in Paso Robles, Atascadero, Templeton, or San Miguel, understanding this essential skill could save you time and trouble in a breakdown situation.

What You’ll Need

To jumpstart your car, you’ll need the following:

  • A pair of jumper cables
  • A second vehicle with a fully charged battery
  • A safe location to perform the jumpstart

Step-by-Step Guide to Jumpstarting Your Car

1. Position the Vehicles Safely

Make sure both vehicles are turned off and positioned close enough so the jumper cables can reach both batteries, but not touching each other. Engage the parking brakes for added safety.

2. Connect the Jumper Cables
  • Red clamp to the dead battery: Attach the red (positive) clamp to the positive terminal on the dead battery.
  • Red clamp to the charged battery: Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery.
  • Black clamp to the charged battery: Connect the black (negative) clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery.
  • Black clamp to a metal ground: Finally, attach the remaining black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery (not the battery itself), such as a clean bolt on the engine block.
3. Start the Vehicles
  • Start the engine of the vehicle with the fully charged battery.
  • Wait a minute or two, then start the engine of the car with the dead battery.
4. Remove the Jumper Cables in Reverse Order

After the dead vehicle starts, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order:

  • Remove the black clamp from the grounded metal surface.
  • Remove the black clamp from the negative terminal of the good battery.
  • Remove the red clamp from the positive terminal of the good battery.
  • Finally, remove the red clamp from the positive terminal of the once-dead battery.
5. Let the Engine Run

Let the newly started vehicle run for at least 10-15 minutes to ensure the battery gets a good charge.

Troubleshooting Tips
  • If the car doesn't start after several attempts, you may have a more serious issue, such as a faulty alternator or a dead battery that needs replacement. In that case, it's time to contact Shift'n Gears Auto Repair for expert assistance.
